What is an alternative medicine?

Alternative medicine encompasses all therapies, medicines, and diagnostic procedures that fall outside the conventional medical scientific model. Current medical science generally treats people only with techniques taught at medical schools or officially recognized paramedical training programs.

If a treatment method does not meet these criteria, it is considered an alternative medicine. Well-known alternative treatments include homeopathy, acupuncture, paranormal healing, and naturopathy.

What is naturopathy?

Naturopathic medicine encompasses all kinds of treatments that aim to activate the body’s self-healing capacity. Naturopathic medicine focuses on the whole person, not just the diseased parts or the pathogens. Naturopathic medicine often refers to strengthening the flow of life energy in the human body.

Are alternative therapies dangerous?

In general, it can be said that alternative medicine is certainly no more dangerous than conventional medicine. Unfortunately, mistakes are regularly made in conventional medicine. A study published in 2009 in the Dutch Journal of Medicine shows that in 2004, approximately 75,000 people who were admitted to hospitals suffered unintended harm as a result of the care they received.

Unfortunately, this is not widely publicized, while the mistakes made by alternative healers are generally given a lot of attention in the press.

Nevertheless, there are many “practitioners” among alternative healers who do not know what they are doing, or worse, who are outright frauds. It is therefore important to be vigilant when seeking alternative healing: is the practitioner professional and is the treatment successful?
